00|| Prologue
At the start, you’d thought so lowly of me. I was just like an ant that you could step on and control. Someone you could easily bring down if you even bothered to look at me.
We were two different people from two completely different worlds. You were privileged while I had to work to get what I wanted.
You had everyone at your feet while I was thrown into a new, confronting world.
Then something happened.
And because of that, whatever happens, I know I’ll be ok.
01|| Start
“Ji Hye!!!” Jae Hyun shouted from the car as he once again pressed down on the car horn repeatedly. But I knew better then to let that distract me as I happily ate my cereal and giggled to myself. Today, I, Ji Hye, am starting my second year at high school at a new school. And my dear, loving and oh-so-caring oppa is going to that school too! ^O^!!
…
The car horn had stopped. O__O
…
5..4..3..2..1 BAM!
Jae Hyun stomped in and pulled me up from my daze with my school bag in his other hand. “God, you’re like a woman,” he muttered as he dragged me out the door.
<_<
“But I am one,”
He muttered to himself again before opening the car door and shoving me in. He got in from the other side and started up the car. And just like that, we were setting off on our first day of school. Well…for me anyway. Cause I forgot to go yesterday. So my dear, loving and oh-so-caring oppa decided to take me there himself.
I squealed with excitement as I thought about all that could happen at Seoul High. It’s been a while since I’ve been out. I looked at the scenery outside the window.
“Why did we move away from our parents anyway oppa?” I asked as I remembered that sudden day, 2 weeks ago, when umma had driven us here. She had not been in contact with us ever since. Well not with me anyway…
“You’re too young to know right now. We won’t be staying here long though don’t worry. Just until things are safer back at home,” Jae Hyun said, his eyes focusing on the road in front of him.
Safer? O_O
I started to laugh at how ridiculous it sounded until oppa started looking at me strangely.
“How can we be possibly in danger? Hehe. It’s not like we run a mafia or anything.” I chuckled again.
…
There was silence.
“OMG! We are?!?!?” I shouted in panic. “WE’RE GONNA DIE OPPA! WE’RE GONNA DIE!!!”
I grabbed onto his collar as I started screaming maniacally.
“JI HYE!” Jae Hyun roared, as the car went swerving to the side violently. I stopped, but let out a few more screams just for the sake of it.
“We’re not part of a mafia Ji Hye. But we are going to die if you don’t let go of my shirt so I can drive properly.”
I shoved him away from me and pouted. There was silence once again as he ignored all my tactics to grab his attention. I dramatically folded my arms together, adding my own sound affects to show him I was pissed at him.
“What now?” he said eyes staring intently at the road.
“Pfft. You’re such a noob.” I said. “I can probably drive this car better than you with my eyes closed.”
“You sound confident for someone who can’t tell their left from right,”
I ignored his remark, as he turned to park by what I assume, was school.
Before me now, stood a tall intimidating building with big words painted across the top. Seoul High.
Wanting to have a good first impression, I quickly patted down my dress and straightened my jumper, as I stepped out of the car. Jae Hyun had already walked ahead.
“Oppa wait!!” I ran after him. “How do I look? Is my dress too short? Too long? What about my hair? Or –“
“It’s not like people are going to notice you anyway,” he said and strolled into the building. “And we’re just in time Ji Hye because class is starting soon.”
I stood aside as oppa went to the reception and got my class details for me.
While I was waiting for him, I took a look around. There were a students walking across the hallways to their classes talking excitedly to each other. Some girls smiled to me from across the hallway and I timidly waved back.
“Babo, let’s go,” oppa said and started walking so quickly that I had to run next to him. He’d only been here a day and he seemed to know his way around the school already.
“Slow down,” I said ,frustrated, as I struggled to keep up.
“What do you mean slow down? I’m walking just like every other person. You just got short, stumpy legs you midget,” his finger poked my forehead as he said the last sentence.
He began walking again, this time much slower.
“You really got to train those legs of yours,” he said. “Cause then how are you going to run away?” the last bit he had said quietly. I was about to question him when he came to an abrupt stop but because of my slow reflexes, I smashed into the classroom door.
“Why’d you stop,” I mumbled painfully as my hands clutched my head.
“Because unlike you, I don’t like to smash into doors,” he said as he checked the classroom number. “Yep, this is the one. Now go inside and have fun. I’m sure they’re eager to have you,” oppa said sarcastically before turning around and leaving quickly.
…
….
…..
I stood there and studied the door for a long time before deciding that it would be a good idea to it and see my class. My hand reached out for the door knob when
BAM! SMASH!! BOOM!!! CLATTER!!!!
The door shook as a great force hit it. I whimpered and jumped back in fright as I heard a painful moan coming from the other side of the door. I heard something fall down. I curiously bent down so I could see under the door crack. There must have been something blocking it so I jabbed my little pinkie in it and heard a cry of pain. I yelped and quickly removed my hand.
“Excuse me,” a voice said. “are you alright?”
I looked up to see a guy looking down at me with an amused expression. He made wearing the uniform properly look so adorable, unlike those rebels who didn’t even bother to tuck their shirt in. = =”
“Hehe…umm…I’m fine,” I said awkwardly. I silently winced. It wasn’t everyday that someone finds you kneeling on the floor with your pinkie out. “I just…wanted to..stretch..?”
“Is this your class?” he said, leaning down as if I was some short kid.
“Yeh, thanks,” I said and turned away hoping he wouldn’t remember my face. I bit my tongue hard as I realized I’d said thanks for no reason.
“Well then I guess I’ll see you around,” he said and winked at me, walking off before I could say anything.
I stood up.
Cussing to myself, I finally decided to open the door before anyone else spotted me in a strange position.
With all my strength and will, I pulled the handle and pushed the door.
02|| Worst luck
To my horror, the door only budged an inch or two.
“Stupid door,” I muttered as I aggressively pushed hard against the door. I stood back, panting already. I ran up to the door and jumped at the door, putting all my body weight on it, but ended up rebounding and hitting the floor. I groaned in pain as I held onto my shoulder. Standing up I angrily kicked the door.
“Stupid door!” I shouted pushing it with all my might when it suddenly burst open. I feel in and once again stumbled to the floor. Hard.
I yelped in pain as I held onto both shoulders now. I’d never gotten hurt so much in ten minutes.
I didn’t realise I was no longer alone until I heard some laughter which quickly dissipated when I looked up. Staring down at me was what would be my class. One particular guy however caught my attention. He was tall and handsome and seemed to be the leader or something because everyone was behind him and looked much more inferior. Noticing that the look he was giving me was unpleasant I laughed awkwardly.
“Um..hehe..I think the door’s a little rusty.” I explained. “I. couldn’t open it….”
He gave me a long, hard look which scared me to the bone.
“Look behind you,” he said scarily, eyes narrowed and jaw clenched.
I turned my head to see a bruised and bashed up body lying by the door. Frightened I screamed (squeaked more like), as I leapt forward away from the body.
Right then, the whole class started laughing at me as I turned a bright shade of red.
I quickly stood up and looked down to hide my face. I clenched my teeth. Where was the teacher? I thought to myself. Or is that body the teacher? I shuddered. No wonder all the tables and chairs were sprawled all over the room, broken and in disarray.
“You new here? What’s your name?” the hot guy said.
…
“Yah!” he said loudly.
“Ji Hye!!” I said quickly.
There as a disturbing silence before he stepped around me and walked out of the room.
Phew!
That was some unrequired drama, but now that he was gone, I could properly get to know my class.
“Hi, I’m Lee Ji Hye. I just moved here two weeks ago. I hope we can be good friends,” I gave a polite bow and finally let my eyes travel along the class smiling.
I stood politely as I let my class inspect me, smile still plastered on my face. A strange silence followed until one girl finally made her way to me.
“Hi Ji Hye! I’m Eun Hyul,” Eun Hyul said kindly pulled me gently by the arm away from where I was standing.
“EVERYONE CLEAN UP THE ROOM!” she yelled at everyone else.
As soon as she had said this, the whole class sprang into action as intact chairs were finally put up again in their correct positions. It was quite amusing to watch. It seemed that Eun Hyul had control over the class.
“Are they always like this?” I asked her curiously.
“No. Not at all. They’re usually much harder to boss around,” she replied as she took a seat. “It’s because of Tae Suk, that’s they’re all shaken up like this.”
“Tae Suk?”
“Yeh, the guy you saw before. He’s a third year. Shouldn’t mess with him. He beat up Jin into a nasty pulp. Look at that ugly thing,” she explained as she pointed her long finger towards the guy lying on the floor.
“What did he do?”
“He said some nasty stuff about Hye In. she’s our previous Queenka. But she died so yeh…Tae Suk’s pretty heartbroken about it. He loved her…” Eun Hyul said as her eyes drifted off. “We all loved her. She was the best thing that happened to the school. Only person who could keep this school behaved…”
<_<
What the hell was she rambling on about?
I was starting to have high doubts about this school. The thought that I’d make normal friends was totally out of the question.
O______________O
“What’s so special about Hye In?”
As soon as I said that, I knew I shouldn’t have.
“YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND DO YOU??” she said maniacally as she grabbed onto my already aching shoulders. “She wasn’t one of those brats who acted like she was superior. She was actually nice and caring!!!”
Eun Hyul suddenly broke into tears and her shoulders shook violently.
O___O
Err…ok….
Instinctively, I gently patted her back. “It’s ok…? What about the new Queenka? I’m sure she’s just as thoughtful,”
“SHE’S A BITCH!!!”Eun Hyul screamed out so loudly that the whole class’s chatter died down to silence. It remained this way until Eun Hyul’s sobs eventually died down.
“Where’s the teacher?” I asked inquiringly.
No one seemed to hear me.
T_T
This was going to be a LONG day.
Eun Hyul sat down on her seat as did the class. All but Jin, who still lay sprawled across the entrance.
“Isn’t anyone going to help him?” I asked.
“You help him and Tae Suk will personally attend to you. I swear he will. Besides, Jin’s probably used to getting beaten up. I mean, look at him, he even has the nerve to smirk at this time.” She said as she pulled me down next to her.
= = He was not smirking, but groaning in utter pain.
“But we can’t just leave him there like that!” What was wrong with this class? They seemed to have no emotions at all.
“He deserved what he got. You know what he said? You want to know? He said that Hye In was a bitch!” she looked at me as if she just announced something really important-in which she hadn’t.
O_O
“Who’s that again?” I asked
“THE QUEENKA YOU BITCH!” she shouted exasperatedly.
That was enough to shut me up. Looking across the room Jin was still in pain while a few laughed at him.
“That’s it!” I said as I got up. “If you’re not going to help him then I will.”
Gathering up courage, I walked up to Jin ignoring the whispers that followed as my classmates checked me out from head to toe.
Up close, Jin wasn’t really as badly hurt as I had thought – which was a relief as I really believed that he was going to die. I stood there in front of him, fingers pressed against the fabric of my skirt. I turned around, wanting to go back now, but the class was looking, awaiting my next move.
I turned back to Jin, not wanting to be faced by the intense scrutinizing of my class.
“Uhhh…Jin?” I said bending down a bit to see his face. A bloody scar ran across his forehead and his left cheek was bruised up. His left ear was red and his lip was cut.
“Are you ok?” I asked and knew I shouldn’t have asked such a stupid question when he didn’t even had the strength to talk. Obviously. He was not ok.
Bending down, I poked him, trying to get a response.
He finally opened his eyes and stared right past me. Violently pushing my finger off me, he managed to sit up.
“Are you ok?” I asked again.
“Will you just fucken shut up with that question already?” he said rudely, cussing to himself.
I stood up abruptly. “Yeh? Well... you should be happy I even bothered with you!”
He looked up at me from his sitting position before looking at a guy seated behind me.
“Who the fuck is this crazy bitch man? She’s fucken ugly.”
<_<
…
He really meant that?
“Humph! And to think that you were dying too. Well…you should just DIE!” I said before turning back to my desk, knowing that I didn’t make sense at all.
Eun Hyul looked at me before getting her books out. “Told ya.”
The day was not going well at all.
03|| First encounter
Three days had past since I first started Seoul High and by now, I’d adjusted to the school and Eun Hyul’s random outbursts at the mention of Hye In, of whom she appeared to treasure dearly.
By now, I’d learnt to avoid Han Hyo Bin, the new Queenka who hung out with her other evil minions on the far side of the canteen. Although their face was caked with make-up, there was no denying that they were pretty and looked up upon at this school. They’d interrogated me the other day, asking of my social status, personal income and the likes. I did not qualify to become one of them.
…
Like I’d want to be anyway.
…
Seriously!
…
Ok so maybe a tad bit, but Eun Hyul was enough for me.
She’d also told me to avoid Tae Suk.
Flashback
“YOU ARE TO HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH HIM! HE IS FOREVER HYE IN’S! YOU STEAL HIM AWAY THEN YOU DIE GOT THAT!?” Eun Byul shouted as she shook my shoulders.
Shocked I nooded. “Like I’d be able to get him anyway. I cant even remember what he looks like,”
“GOOD!” she shouted.
I nodded again.
“Good,” she said.
…
…
“Cause you’re pretty you know. So don’t attract attention.” She said quietly.
This time, it was me who shook her shoulders.
“YOU REALLY THINK THAT? YOU DO?”
“BUT YOU START GOING AFTER TAE SUK, I SWEAR HYE IN WILL WALK OUT OF HER GRAVE AND CHOKE YOU.”
O_O
“I thought she was nice,”
And just like that, Eun Hyul went into one of her tantrums. Again.
End of Flashback
Tae Suk was a grade above us but two years older then us.
Let’s just say he’s not the most intelligent thing roaming around Earth.
“Come on. What are you doing?” Eun Hyul hollered as she shoved me forward.
Out of my state of daydream, I made way to our table in which we sat at everyday.
“So as I was saying, Hye In used to always wear this really cute belt. It was like…her trademark…”
Eun Hyul’s obsession was really getting out of hand.
= =
Suddenly, loud bickering and squeals were heard along the canteen.
“Oi make way ladies! Rare visit here!” a guy’s voice shouted as the girls made a pathway.
“Ahh! He’s coming!” girls shouted here and there, while less boy-crazed girls walked away from the canteen area. Looking across, I could see Queenka applying on make-up, while her little slaves fixed her hair.
Eun Hyul by now had stopped her rambling. Coming into the canteen was the guy I immediately recognized as Tae Suk and what would be his mates. The loud one that had been making a big thing about their entrance finally shut up.
The Queenka, Hyo Bin attached herself to his arm.
“Why hello oppa,” she said, her voice sweet.
“Why that bitch. If only Hye In was here…blah blah blah,” Eun Hyul was getting obsessive again.
Tae Suk’s eyes scanned the canteen, scrutinizing each and every face until he landed on me.
Then he started walking over, a smirk stretched out on his perfectly portioned face.
Uh oh.
Tae Suk’s probably gonna make a fool of me in front of the whole canteen.
Tae Suk stopped when he was close enough for me to find him intimidating.
“So…Lee Ji Hye,” he said as if it was the most distasteful name he’s ever said.
O__O
He looked me up and down before meeting my eyes again.
O__O
What can he possibly want to do with me?
O__O
“Lee. Jae. Hyun. He’s your brother yes?”
I nodded vigorously.
O__O
“Well then.” He stated.
I looked down, clearly not wanting to see his gaze pierce me.
Everyone was watching.
It was a real pity. I’d planned on making a second friend.
“Jae. Hyun.” He said through gritted teeth. “I don’t like him.”
O__O
And?
There was really no reason for him to come here just to say that.
But then again, he’s stupid isn’t he?
“What are you trying to say huh?” Tae Suk suddenly questioned.
“Nothing,” I said quietly.
“You got nothing to say huh? Of course. Pity your brother’s got too much to say.”
And at that moment he laughed at me.
His mates quickly followed and soon, girls who loved him and everyone else started to laugh.
In other words, the whole canteen population was laughing at me. Do they even know why they’re laughing for? =-=
I’d never felt more humiliated in my whole entire life.
Ever Eun Hyul managed a few laughs. Hyo Bin on the other hand, was laughing the loudest. I never thought it was possible for a human to make such a perfect imitation of a hyena.
I held back a chuckle. Instincts told me now was not a good time to laugh. I was after all, still the subject of laughter.
I could feel Tae Suk’s stare.
“If I were your brother…” he began before leaning in.
“…I’d be careful. Very. Careful. Because shit happens. Don’t forget that.”
O______O
All that just to pass a message to my brother..?
^O^ He must be special!
Then I heard him walk away with his friends whistling and mucking about. As I looked up, one of them turned around to look at me, winked, and then walked away, hollering along with his friends.
Silence followed. Hyo Bin gave a satisfied smile before walking back to the table and the canteen filled with noise again, as if Tae Suk never came.
“Well now…” Eun Hyul said. “Let’s just pretend that never happened.”
I nodded.
At that moment, I decided that I hated Tae Suk. I hated him as much as vanilla ice-cream spilt on the little dusty floor.(Trust me, that happens)
In other words, I REALLY hated him.
04|| Potential trouble
I walked home alone, after having had waited for Jae Hyun to take me home. He failed to turn up.
I’d been wanting to ask him what the incident with Tae Suk was all about, but I hadn’t seen him since this morning, so here I was, walking home by myself in a place I hardly knew. Oh the joy of life! T_T
The house we had here was a cute little double story house that umma had bought at the last minute. I’d managed to plant some daisies in the front garden with some of the money umma had given us to survive alone for a while.
Flashback
“JI HYE! WHY DID YOU SPEND ALL OUR MONEY BUYING STUPID FLOWERS??! HOW ARE WE GONNA SURVIVE NOW?” Jae Hyun shouted towering over me as I planted daisies along the garden.
Umma had understood and sent us our supplies and Jae Hyun started working.
As I reached our house, I reached up to retie my hair which by now was a messy bun. That’s when I heard it.
The earsplitting sound of glass breaking. Stupidly, I ran up the front gate, aligned with daisies and burst through the front door.
There was silence.
I stretched out my tie hair, ready to flick anyone who appeared in front of me.
…
“Hello…?” I said quietly. “Jae?”
I stepped forward.
Suddenly a person appeared in front of me and I quickly released my tie hair, flicking him perfectly on the face.
“Hey!”
The person had his face covered, howling in pain. “My eye! Ji Hye! What was that for?”
“Jae?” I said as I stepped forward.
“Who else would I be?”
“Jae!” I leapt at him, hitting him as hard as I could. “I thought there a robber in here trying to steal our vase,”
He gave me a dry look.
“Why a vase of all things?”
“I heard glass break.” I explained. “And anyway, why didn’t you pick me up? I was waiting for-”
Jae was running up the steps at this point, going up two steps at a time. Pfft. Like I couldn’t do that.
“Where did you hear it?” he asked as he opened the doors.
Confused, I ran up the stairs to where he stood, at the entrance of his room. I joined him there to see what had disturbed him so much.
I gasped as I looked at his room.
Everything had been thrown around, the bed flipped and books scrawled everywhere. But what caught my attention the most was the broken window.
His room was a total mess. He was home all this time too. As if he didn’t notice. =-=
He walked forward, till he stood at the edge of the window and looked down.
“Bastards,” he muttered.
“Everything alright?” I asked as I peeped out the window, where I could see my daisy garden. Glass was scattered all over them, glinting in the sun making my daisy look magical. Or so I liked to believe.
“Oh, just look at the pretty flowers,”
Jae Hyun looked at me for a moment.
“Ji Hye, we should go someplace else. It’s not safe here either,” he said.
“But I just started school. Oh yeh, what’s with you and Tae Suk? he came to me today and he was pissed off at you,”
“You would not understand Ji Hye,” he said as he pulled out his bedsheet and hung it across the window.
I sat down on a chair as I watched him stick the edge along the window pane, covering up the breeze that was coming through.
“When did you say you heard this Ji Hye?” he asked as he began to clean up his room.
“Umm…as I was opening the gate.” I replied and got down to help him.
“Why didn’t I hear it?” he said to himself. “From now on Ji Hye, don’t go anywhere without me.”
I protested.
“It’s your fault. You forgot to pick me up!”
“I didn’t forget. I just couldn’t be bothered.” He commented as he threw his books on his desk without even tidying it up. “You’re not a child you know.”
“But what if I had gotten lost?”
“I said you’re not a child. So you wouldn’t get lost. Besides, you didn’t.”
“You just told me not to go anywhere without you! And you’re telling me to go home by myself,” >_>
“No that was BEFORE I realised we have a hooligan running in this neighborhood.”
“ARGH You don’t make sense!” I was getting angry that he acted so casually about everything.
He sighed.
“Just grow up Ji Hye.”
“What do you mean? I just-“
“JUST SHUT UP!” he shouted as he angrily flipped the bed to it’s proper position.
“FINE!” I shouted and stomped out of his room. “URGH!”
I knew he was shaken up from what had happened to his room, but I couldn’t help but get pissed at him.
“That moron,” I muttered as I lay back on my own bed, plugged in my earphones and fell into a nap, listening to music.
When I woke up, I was home alone.
I had a quick shower, changed out of my uniform.
Going downstairs, I opened the fridge, looking for any dinner.
Sure Jae was pissed at me, but he wouldn’t starve me right?
I was wrong. There was only milk in the fridge. Opening the refrigerator, there was ice-cream, frozen fish and…wait a minute…
ICE CREAM!
I lunged at it, afraid it might just run away.
Vanilla. My favourite.
I took out two tubs of it.
Grabbing a spoon, I settled myself in front of the television and dug in.
This would have to be my best dinner ever.
05|| What’s your name again?
I groaned heavily for the 9th time as I dragged myself from class. The day was finally over.
“What’s wrong” Eun Hyul asked as she walked out of the school yard with me.
“Too. Much. Ice cream.”
She turned to me and looked me in the eye.
“What flavour? You’ve GOT to tell me!”
“Umm…vanilla? My poor tum tum has been hurting ALL night!”
“VANILLA?” came Eun Hyul’s screeching answer. “Hye In liked vanilla too…”
O____O
Maybe Jae was right. We should move somewhere else. There is really no point at staying here at all considering the fact that my one and only friend is an obsessive freak.
Must get away, must get away…
“Umm…oohh the sky looks dark. I better get home. See you soon Eun Hyul. Bye” I said quickly before hurrying in the opposite direction and headed home.
As I made my way through the gate, I realised there was something wrong.
TERRIBLY WRONG!
I felt my breath quicken and my eyes watering. My heartbeat quickened and my palms went clammy.
I let out a slight gasp as I saw the horrendous state my daisies were in.
TRAMPLED!
WILTED!
NEGELECTED!
BLEEDINGGGGGG – well, one can try and imagine.
It must’ve been Jae I concluded. That dear, loving and oh-so-caring oppa! T_T
I stomped through the door, releasing my elastic band from my hair, more then ready to set a red mark across his face with it.
“YAHHH YOU KILLED MY DAISIES YOU @$%^@#$%$%!@#$@#@”
*flick
Bullseye!
“ARGH WHO DID THAT?” My victim cried, releasing a more intimidating line of curses then mine.
But I must say, it was a stupid question to ask considering the fact that I was standing right in front of him, fingers still poised in my verrrrrrrrry attacking and intimidating position.
My vengeance over my ruined daisies extinguished when he removed his hands and his face came into view.
Tattoo, piercings, flaring nostrils, shaking eyes, BIGGG head…
And buck teeth BAHAHAHHAAA
Buck teeth aside, he was scary. Not just any scary-cause there is some amount I can handle, this man was the REAL, AUTHENTIC scary with that don’t-mess-with-me face- well in my book anyways.
“You’ve got some nerve girl. Must be a relative of that fker then,” he said, and his voice did well to match his face.
“I..I well..” I took a step back.
He grinned the evil grin.
“And you were acting so high and mighty just a moment ago. Pathetic really. Just like Jae. Hey boys check this out! This b*tch knows that fker!”
